Daniel Sams’ unbeaten 44-ball 98 and Alex Hales’ 28-ball 63 helped Sydney Thunder thrash Melbourne Renegades by 129 runs in Match 40 of the Big Bash League 2021/22. The Thunder piled 209/7 after being asked to bat and bundled out the Renegades for 80 in 14.2 overs to register their fifth-straight win in the competition.

Mohammad Hasnain (3-22), Gurinder Sandhu (2-8) and Tanveer Sangha (2-12) starred with ball. James Seymour (25) was the only Renegades batter who scored more than 20. Aaron Finch and Kane Richardson scored 17 each.

Brisbane Heat v Hobart Hurricanes

Brisbane Heat 144/8 in 20 overs (Pfeffer 69; Lamichhane 2-23) lost to Hobart Hurricanes 145/2 in 17.2 overs (McDermott 93; Prestwidge 2-37) by 8 wickets with 16 balls to spare. Player of the Match: Ben McDermott.

Hobart Hurricanes beat Brisbane Heat by eight wickets in Match 41 of the competition. They restricted the Heat to 144/8 and reached the target with 16 balls to spare.

Ben McDermott was adjudged Player of the Match for his 61-ball 93. He added 117 with Peter Handscomb (27*) before D'Arcy Short (12*) hit the winning run in the 18th over.

Earlier, Sandeep Lamichhane and Mitchell Owen took two wickets apiece for the Hurricanes. Lachlan Pfeffer top-scored for the Heat, with a 51-ball 69, while Will Prestwidge made a seven-ball 21.
